Ten 3830 clubs celebrated Rotary International Literacy Day (which falls on Sep. 8) by addressing RI’s thrust on Child Mortality Reduction through a major Medical, Dental, Nutrition, Environment and Literacy project last September 6, 2008 in Sucat, Muntinlupa City.  The beneficiaries numbered to about 400 day care students of Barangay Sucat and 50 under nourished children from Sitio Creekside.

The activities were participated in by eight Rotary clubs from Alabang and Muntinlupa areas, headed by their respective Real Good Presidents (RGP) Lilia Dinglasan (Muntinlupa Central), Raffy Villanueva (Alabang), Andy Umlas (Alabang North), Chad Carungin (Muntinlupa), Andrew Frondozo (Muntinlupa City Center), Sweetie Gardiner (Muntinlupa Filinvest), Menchie Muaña (Muntinlupa North) and Totoy Tijares (Muntinlupa South).  They were joined by two Makati clubs headed by their RGPs Jaz Rodriguez (Makati EDSA) and Vic The (Pasong Tamo).

After the inspiring message by DG Boyet Limon, RC Muntinlupa Central IPP Tess Filoteo conducted an interactive presentation on value formation and environment awareness projects “Saang Landas Ka Patungo, Bata?” and “Ikaw Bata at ang Iyong Kapaligiran” where children actively participated in answering questions.  A demonstration on proper dental care was then presented by the RC Makati EDSA, followed by RC Muntinlupa who discussed health and hygiene to the children.

After the lectures, medical check up were made on 50 under nourished children who were also given medicines, vitamins and hygiene kits courtesy of RCs Muntinlupa, Muntinlupa Central and Muntinlupa Filinvest. The day care children, on other hand, were given dental care kits donated by RCs Muntinlupa, Muntinlupa Central, Muntinlupa City Center, Makati EDSA and Makati Pasong Tamo.

Towards the end of the activities, the children and their parents were treated with nutritious foods, which include porridge (lugaw), noodle soup, sandwiches, milk, juice drinks, rice cake (puto) and take-home goodies from RCs Alabang, Alabang North, Muntinlupa Central, Muntinlupa North, and Muntinlupa South.

As children, parents and teachers left with smiles on their faces, the Rotarians can not help but express their real good feelings.  They were more than happy to conclude another successful and laudable Rotary service activity.
